Kyln, now Bellatrix, ADOPTED, updated 12/19/20

Tiny Kyln has a big presence

Little Kyln is soooo smol. Yes, I know how to spell small and most of you probably know it's internet slang- but my mom sends me edit notes for my blog- and she'll think it's a typo. I've had her nearly 3 weeks now and she's barely maintaining her starting weight, though she eats with gusto. She just eats very small amounts at a time.

Kyln was the first to climb and explore. I lost her several times when she got somewhere unexpected.

I love her face and her cat-titude. She has never allowed her siblings to push her around. She'll crawl over them to get to a kitten treat and isn't shy about demanding your attention either. Kyln is particularly interested in the older house cats, particularly the female chonky ones. She is so tiny she can slide right under their bellies to try to nurse on them. So cute. So unproductive. So annoying to the older kittens.

I missed the video of her nursing attempts, but she led her pack in a Kairi chase. When she gets tired of chasing the housecats, she can almost always be found in a pile of siblings.

Kyln has also become pretty responsive. She'll come when you call her. She'll come when you call her sibling. She'll come if you call another cat. She'll come if you walk into the room and say hi. She's becoming very friendly!

Update 11/8/20

Kyln is the easiest to find photos and videos, though they're rarely of her face- which is so often buried in a housecat belly. She has given up on Kairi- who avoids the kittens at all costs. But she discovered Mama Mochi, Mama Pigwidgeon, and Mama Katsu are happy to be additional foster moms. Kyln definitely needs to go to a home with friendly cats.

I'm particularly enchanted with the pictures on the top... especially the one on the left. Her look of pure adoration turns me into a pile of happy goo.

Update 11/28/20

Little Kyln decided that failing to gain weight for weeks wasn't enough worry. Her poor eye got swollen and watery and we were convinced she was deaf. One night I reached for something and my chair shot out from under me. The chair and I crashed to the ground with a resounding thud, scattering the kittens who were nomming on their dinner right behind my desk.... but when I was able to sit up and look around, there was Kyln, calmly eating with her back towards the chair less than a foot from her.

Over the next few days, we did tons of tests to see if she'd react to noise, and it really seemed like she didn't! Our vacuum has a light on it, so we had to be careful it was out of her line of sight. The hubby would wave a feather wand on one end of the room and I'd wait until all her siblings were behind her, out of her sight, then wildly shake the food treats. If she happened to catch movement from the corner of her eye, she'd turn- but if she was truly visually focused on the feather and no sibling movement caught her attention, she'd continue to play, completely oblivious. As soon as one of her acrobatic flips turned her so she could see her siblings crowding me, begging for treats, she'd come running.

None of our pets fear the vacuum, but I really see no reaction to the noise from Kyln.

For several days, we randomly shouted, clapped, whistled, barked, shook treats, slammed doors... she didn't react at all if she didn't see us or if she didn't notice her siblings reacting. But after a few nights, completely convinced she was deaf, we tossed a chirping cat toy on the bed and her ears twitched. She's more reactive to high pitches- but she is, once again, reacting to sounds. We're not sure if she had an ear infection or wax build up (I did clean out her ears a few times), intermittent hearing loss, or maybe hearing loss for lower frequencies.

We did wonder if that's why she clings to her siblings and older cats so much... perhaps she relies on them for cues because she's hard of hearing.

Whatever the reason, Kyln NEEDS to go to a house with at least a sibling or an older nurturing cat-especially a fluffy one. Her FAVORITE past time is starting a snuggle fest.

Like her siblings, she can be shy at first, but once she trusts you, she's a very chill kitten. She doesn't mind costumes a bit!

They got fixed the day before Thanksgiving, so they'll be heading to the adoption center a week from today. I finished their collages and am working on their bios...

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb...

I guess Kyln wanted you to know that... she jumped into my lap 3x and I kept moving her to the side, but she insisted on getting onto the keyboard, so there you are.

As I was saying, I'm trying to get everything set up for their upcoming adoptions in advance, since I have a busy work week this week. Normally I just attempt to find a few cute pictures from the thousands I take and put them in a collage... but as I was working on them, I got an inspiration to do a thematic photoshoot!

Kyln's mugshot ID was the most difficult- I struggled to find something meaningful. But her "crime" was one of the easiest to term- I'm very pleased with the description!

update 12/8/20

It's been rough trying to change from calling "Kitten Kyln" to Bellatrix- but we've been trying to do so ever since some friends came over to meet kittens. Bellatrix and brother Azkaban picked their new mom- who kept Azkaban's name and chose Bellatrix to fit the theme.

Unfortunately, Bellatrix got congested and had to go on antibiotics a few days before adoptions. She had to be kept home while her siblings went to the adoption center, including brother Azkaban who is now with their new family.

She is so good about taking her medicine, but still sounds so phlegmy. She also misses her siblings terribly, though there are many cat friends around. Though she usually hangs in the bedroom, after a full day being gone at adoptions then running some errands, I came home to see this as soon as I opened the door.

Bellatrix has been super clingy since being without her siblings. She is always in laps and on shoulders lately. We're not sure what she was doing here... but she sure was enjoying it. We giggled for so long as she gnawed on his shirt like a vicious mini land shark.

Update 12/19/20

Bellatrix's extended stay meant she was still with us when the Cows came out of quarantine. She was not a fan. Baby Bellatrix fell instantly in love with my older house pets but was completely disgruntled being dethroned as the tiny tot. The only thing she liked was the occasional appearance of wet kitten snacks, which she felt belonged to her.

It took 2 days before Bella did much besides stalk me for alone time and beg for food... but her playful spirit finally won out and she began to play again.... She wasn't very good at it... repeatedly attacking the stick instead of the toys, but we loved to see her enjoying life again.

After those first two days Bellatrix also decided that the Cows were great playmates. I never managed to get any decent pictures of them together before Bellatrix was healthy enough to go to her forever home. The best I can find is this one peaceful interaction.

Brother Azkaban took the trip back down the hill to pick up his sister. He was eager to show her all the wonderful things in their new home, but she was a bit nervous at first. She's settling down now, and loves being reunited with her brother.

Because it's 2020 and they're not stupid, these two love to play around in the toilet paper drawer.
