Foster Kitten Supplies!!!

Writer's picture: Melanie JohnsonMelanie Johnson

The foster agency supplied me with the basics- a small crate, litter box, litter, food, a hanging cube for the crate. In theory, fostering kittens cost the foster parents nothing- as they supply it all!

In reality, this was a very expensive batch of foster kittens.

The cat hoodie was already in my wardrobe... birthday present from my brother. 8 house cats had already been shoved into this wearable pocket (with varying degrees of success) and it was fun to fit all 5 tiny kittens in. But it's summery time and kittens are warm... and the room we had to keep them in for the first week (separate from our own feline family) was always toasty.

But a wearable cat sling, designed for this specific purpose (and a phone pocket on the strap I discovered belatedly... keeps it handy for when you need to take "just one more" cat picture/video)... I can now carry a sleepy kitten around while I do chores, go potty, blog, or spend time with my house pets.

Holding sleeping kittens was easy, but when they felt playful... it was hard to keep them contained in the safe areas, especially when we had to separate them from the other pets. This pop-up playpen was ideal!! Easy to move around into any room and big enough to fit two hoomans. The kittens could curl up, run around/over, and climb the hooman of their choice. It didn't take long before the hard tile floors hurt, so pet beds started making their way into the house.

Kittens loved the hanging cube, the the one they gave me was missing one strap and hung lopsided.

Amazon to the rescue! They love their double hammock and I love watching them try to climb into it with their uncoordinated flailing limbs and oversized kitten bellies. Scotchmallow learned to climb up the side of the crate and launch himself onto the top level. A tri-level ball toy that my house cats ignored for years makes a handle step to help them up. They're still learning to get into the swinging teepee. I think only Cotton Candy has managed that so far.

6/17/19 Grandpa came to visit and surprised us all by climbing in to be climbed on!

Cleaning litter boxes was a challenge. They always wanted to escape and run, but I couldn't keep them from getting stuck under the couches and scoop their poop at the same time. I used the pop-up playpen a few times, but I usually scooped at the same time or after they ate, and they had a few accidents. When looking for a larger, fluffier pet bed at a discount store, I found this reasonably priced pen. It has made cleaning time and feeding time so much easier! They can climb it, so I can't leave them in there unsupervised, but they love the bigger space to get their zoomies out and the house cats like being able to jump in and out to visit or steal food.

Grandpa loved swinging them in the little cat hammock. I wish I could figure out why my videos won't upload!
