Eyrie, now Ruca, ADOPTED updated 12/8/20

Writer's picture: Melanie JohnsonMelanie Johnson

Eyrie is the most mellow of her litter. She is happy to play if they're playing, nap if they're napping, cuddle if we want to cuddle, or eat if it is time to eat. She's just agreeable to everything!

She is particularly drawn to her twin brother, Shawshank. They love to sit in a fully inclusive kitten pile the most- but if they're in groups, she is nearly always with Shawshank. She loves to wrestle with him and to stalk him.

Eyrie likes people as well. She'll relax completely if you pick her up for a snuggle.

Like brother Azkaban, I've had a challenge getting pictures of Eyrie. She is almost always in a kitten pile (we try to get pictures of them alone) or I get her mixed up with her brother in photos... when they're together, it's easy to tell them apart by size... but in photos, I just don't always know!! Especially when they're in tiny thumbnails when I'm trying to select which ones to put in the blog... I just can't see!

This morning I recruited help from the husband... I tried to get her attention to the camera and he snapped photos. He's worse than me, but because we took so many, there are some cute ones!

Update 11/28/2020

Though we're careful to get our kittens as comfortable with being kenneled as possible- a challenging feat with the Jailbirds- we also think it is important to tell potential families their sleep habits. As they get older, we often transition them to the kennel during the day when we're at work, and sleeping in the bedroom at night- at least a few nights... for research!

Eyrie is an early morning cuddler. I'm an early bird, so I often fall asleep while they're still in play mode. I've been having some (NON COVID) related health issues so I've been extra tired. I don't think I've ever fallen asleep with her on me, but she is ALWAYS there in the morning- either curled up in my back, on my feet, or wedged between my legs or behind my knees. When I start to stir, she will often come up for morning kisses and a purr fest. Unfortunately, this is usually around 4:30am while my husband, the opposite of a morning person, is still in dream land and he's light sensitive- so I don't get any pictures of her in snuggle mode.

Laid back Eyrie is often on the bottom of kitten piles with her face buried under her siblings. She'll move in for some private snuggle time, but is almost always interrupted by sister Kyln, who crawls right over her to get the attention. Patient Eyrie just sleeps on as the other kittens move in.

Eyrie was the last one ready for her Jailbirds theme photoshoot. Taking the advice from another foster, I woke them up for the pictures, posing them and snapping pictures while they were still half asleep. But that only worked for the first 3. By the time I got to Eyrie, she was wide awake and active. I took more pictures because I had to trash over half- just gray blurs behind black bars. The feather wand couldn't hold her attention, so we used treat tubes-I quite enjoyed several, even if they're still a little blurry.

Eyrie's prison mugshot ID was fairly easy to do, though a rather obscure reference. I'll be surprised if anyone recognizes it. In fact, I'm not sure a single person has readily identified her name. But that won't stop her from messing with your heart and making you fall for her charms completely!

Eyrie surrenders to your love!!

update 12/8/2020

Eyrie and her siblings stopped for a kitten visit with former foster friend, Beignet, on their way to their microchip appointment. Beignet was so excited to see his friends- but he had forgotten how to play with others and was a little overbearing.... hovering over them and trying to play. Eyrie was overwhelmed and hid... so well that we could NOT find her. After an extensive, 40 minute search- I had to leave to make it to the microhip appointment. My parents kept looking for her and sending disappointing updates. My overactive imagination went over hundreds of possible scenarios- progressively worse with every passing hour. Over 5 hours later, they finally saw her darting from one hiding spot to another and caught her,

She seemed to forget the entire incident by the time we got her home... happily playing with her siblings, begging for food, cuddling with us without a care in the world. But I made sure to update her personality checklist to note she was slow to warm up and might need time to adjust to a new environment.

For the first time, I was able to do adoption interviews on the same day that my kittens were ready for adoption. Several people signed up to meet Eyrie, but she was feeling pretty shy and I did let them know she hid in an unfamiliar environment. I wanted to be sure her new parents were prepared to give her the time she might need to adjust and not be too disappointed if she took a few days to show her true personality.

Her brothers were adopted out (sister Kyln was kept home sick and she was all alone when a lovely couple came in looking for a kitten friend for their cat Spooky. They met Eyrie and the other 2 kittens remaining. They were hesitant, because all 3 were rather shy- but I happened to mention Eyrie's thunderous cat feet and they just lit up- exclaiming their Spooky also failed to tread lightly like a normal cat. They hoped the two would bond over their love to tear around the house at 3am, paws drumming out their paths. We spent some time reviewing strategies to introduce new pets... which ended up being absolutely pointless.

Eyrie's new parents are much better photographers than I am!

Eyrie, renamed Ruca (from the Sublime song "Waiting for my Ruca") and new sibling Spooky fell in love at first sight. Their mom tried to apologize for sending me several emails with pictures... as if I'd EVER complain about getting cat pictures delivered to my inbox!!

Ruca and Spooky do thunder around the house until they're worn out- then they fall into a cuddle fest.

Eyrie sent Spooky into bliss with her face kneading.

But I had to watch this video a half dozen times in a row. These two were meant for each other!!
